Allene was born in Forsyth County in January 1928 to Mary and Clinton Sprinkle, one of seven children who grew up on a farm called Grassy Hill. She attended and played basketball at Old Richmond High School and later attended Winston-Salem Business College. She worked and lived in a boarding house in downtown Winston, where she met her future husband, Jim, a World War II veteran from Rockingham, NC, who had his first job at Western Electric. They married in October 1949.

Allene was a devoted wife to Jim, a mother and housewife. She loved her family, her church, danced, played bridge and traveled with friends. She was also known for the holiday meals she prepared for the family who spent many happy hours at their table.

Her husband, James R. Hutchinson, recently preceded in death. Before that, her parents were Clinton and Mary Sprinkle; four sisters – Virginia, Grace, Alma Rose, and Martha; and two brothers – Elwood and Vance.

Her son, David James Hutchinson of Greensboro (wife Jeanelle) survived; and a daughter, Lisa Hutchinson Lowe of High Point. She also leaves a brother-in-law and several sisters-in-law, as well as many nieces and nephews.

“Grandma” was particularly proud of her four grandchildren and spent countless hours looking after them – from picking them up from school and driving to sports, piano and dance lessons. The cousins spent many days and weekends together playing games or spending the night with Grandma. They are Robin Lowe Lipe of Charlotte (husband Scott); Ethan Gray Hutchinson from Tennessee (partner Sarah); Allyson K. Hutchinson of Oregon; and Kerri Lowe Van Kirk of Maine (husband Charles). She has three great-grandchildren: Hunter, Jack and Elizabeth Lipe.
