Greensboro-Dr. Helen Marie Stinson, 89, died on July 26, 2021 at Authoracare Hospice (Beacon Place). She was born in Chatham County, NC and raised in Ramseur, NC, where she discovered her love for gardening and flowers. After high school, she completed her teaching degrees at Gardner-Webb University and Appalachian State University and then taught sign language at the School for the Deaf in Morganton. She then decided to study medicine and graduated from Wake Forest University with an undergraduate degree, followed by a medical degree from the University of Tennessee. In 1972 Helen opened her office in Greensboro to practice cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. After 25 years, she retired from her practice. Helen often did medical work for charities for little or no wages. In the early 1980s, still in her practice, she joined the Army Reserve Medical Corps and in 1991 went to Kuwait for Operation Desert Storm. She reached the rank of colonel and withdrew from the reserves after 14 years of service. And Helen was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Greensboro for many years.
She was preceded in death by her parents Marvin Durham and Mary Catherine Benner Stinson; Brothers Henry and John Stinson; Sisters Elizabeth Rinehardt, Lula Payne, Lillie Nance, and Mary Deane Stinson.
She is survived by sisters Millie Power (Ed) and Goldie York. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 31, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Sunset Knoll Cemetery in Ramseur, NC, under the direction of Rev. Ted York. The family demands compliance with the Covid-19 protocols. Friends and family can visit the funeral home and view the corpse on Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday until 11.30 a.m. Forbis and Dick Funeral Service N.
