Obituary for Dorothy Carr (1930-2021) – Greensboro, NC
Carr, Dorothy Christine
December 15, 1930 – May 7, 2021
Dorothy “Christine” Carr died peacefully surrounded by her family on May 7, 2021. Christine was born on December 15, 1930 in Guilford County to the late Adam Walker Jordan and Fanny Ellen Nall Jordan. She was a stubborn and generous woman who never let a guest leave her at home without a plate of food, an arrangement of local flowers and a glass of sweet tea. Christine was married to Dorsel Edwin Carr at the age of 17 and spent the rest of her life working hard and taking care of their four children. She was a smart and talented businesswoman who scooped ice cream at the Mayberry Ice Cream Shop for 40 years. She was known to customers as Mrs. Mayberry and she always called her by name – Mr. Egg Salad, Mrs. Chicken Salad, etc. Christine put down her shovel in her shop on Mayberry Lee Street in 1996. “Retirement” wasn’t in Christine’s vocabulary as she spent the next 30 years looking after her family and tending her lush gardens full of tropical hibiscus, daylilies, irises and more. She was known to friends and family for her entertaining “southern states”. Family favorites include “My getting up and leaving is done, getting up and leaving” and “How cute it is!” In the last years of her life she was lovingly cared for by her daughters Linda and Wanda, granddaughter Krystal and caretaker Jo-anne Buck.
In addition to her parents, Christine was preceded into death by her 13 siblings. Survivors include their sons Donald Carr (Linda) and John Carr (Pat) and daughters Linda Surber (Jim) and Wanda Truitt (George). She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren Jason Carr, Krystal Truitt, Craig Surber (Alex), Eric Surber, Christin Cecil (Tyler) and Lauren Shears (Matt), great grandchildren Katie Carr and Ryder Surber, and many other extended family members and friends.
A funeral service for family and friends will be held at the Lakeview Memorial Park Cemetery in Greensboro, NC on Monday, May 10, 2021 at 1:00 p.m.
