McMasters, Dorothy Elizabeth Varner

March 5, 1926 – May 15, 2021

Dorothy Elizabeth Varner McMasters, 95, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday morning, May 15, 2021. She was born on March 5, 1926 in Greensboro, NC, to the late Marvin S. Varner and Carrie Sue Ray Varner.

She graduated from Greensboro High School and owned McMasters Catering until she retired in 2011.

Being in the kitchen was her passion. During her 43-year career, she catered for many weddings and large parties. Dotte was an artist, her wedding cakes were beautiful, and her party tables were full of delicious food. For many years she always cooked faceout meals and supplied her church, First Lutheran in Greensboro, with freshly baked communion bread. Dotte published her cookbook in 2012 and loved sharing her recipes with family and friends. In later years she enjoyed baking cakes for her great-grandchildren’s birthdays and watching cooking shows and westerns on television. She was a member of the Pleasant Garden Book Club and a special friend to many.

Dotte donated her body to Elon University’s Anatomical Gift program to advance medical knowledge. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the First Lutheran Church in Your Memory, 3600 Friendly Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27410-4844.

Dotte was preceded in the death by her husband of 36 years, Dennis Worth McMasters; Sister Celia V. Stowe; Brothers Marvin S. Varner, Wilbur R. Varner, and Jack H. Varner.

She is survived by her five children: Cheri M. Yates (Ron), Stephen D. McMasters, Sr. (Nellie), Karen M. Moyer (Blair), Cindy M. Shutt (Danny), Timothy W. McMasters, Sr. (Betty); twelve grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. She loved the special times when we could all be together.

Please join our family to celebrate our mother (Grani Dotte) under the trees at 418 Robalo Road in Greensboro on the evening of June 7, 2021 at 6:30 p.m.
