Maier, John Bonafice (JB)

Greensboro – John Bonafice (JB) Maier, 85, passed away peacefully with his family on December 21, 2020 on Beacon Place.

A private family service will take place on January 8, 2020 in the Catholic Church of St. Benedict.

John was born in Rochester, New York, to Raymond William Rufus Maier and Alma Louise Magin Maier. “JB” was a graduate of Saint Thomas Aquinas High School. He received his BS in chemical engineering from the University of Rochester and later a doctorate in law from the University of Baltimore, School of Law. His class was one of the first to graduate from the University of Baltimore Law School. He was inducted into the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and licensed to practice in North Carolina and Maryland.

John was also admitted to the federal district in the United States Court of Appeals. He was a founding member of the North Carolina Bar Association’s intellectual property law department, including serving as tenure president. After working as a patent attorney in Washington DC, he served as Chief Patent Counsel for Burlington Industries. He was responsible for advising on intellectual property issues and litigation related to intellectual property. John retired from Burlington Industries and consulted for a number of years.

He believed in fairness and equality and made an effort to provide opportunities for the disadvantaged, as demonstrated during his tenure as commissioner with the Greensboro Housing Authority. He enjoyed traveling, working outside, gardening, and building things that would last, including many longstanding relationships. John was a teacher and had a deep willingness to share knowledge and insights. He was known for remembering facts and significant events. He will surely be missed.

John is survived by his wife Stephanie of sixty years; his children John B. Maier II (Jennie) from Washington, DC, Michael C. Maier (Allison) from Madrid, IA, Douglas W. Maier from Aurora, CO; nine grandchildren, Catherine, John B., III, Michael, William, Magin, Elizabeth, Douglas, McKenzie, and Whitney; and two bootlegs, Harry and Grayson.
