Obituary for Katharine Ravenel (1933-2021) – Greensboro, NC
Ravenel, Katharine “Kit” Parr
June 5, 1933 – April 23, 2021
Kit was born in Greensboro, NC. to Dr. Samuel Fitzsimmons Ravenel and Katharine Brown Ravenel. She was a proud graduate of Aycock School and Mrs. Rypins Private School. Kit graduated from Duke University with a BA and later earned her MA from Fairfield University, Connecticut.
After graduating from Duke, Kit taught 7th grade in the Southern Pines public school system. She moved to New York City and met Roy Dickerson on the Vermont ski slopes. Their 30-year marriage included extensive travel across the US and the world, including two European postings in London and Zurich. They worked, traveled, skied, played tennis, and most importantly (according to Kit) produced two great daughters.
Returning to Greensboro in 1985, Kit was a senior lecturer at the Greensboro Historical Museum, sponsoring refugee families, teaching ESL, and serving as an intermediary for Guilford County’s intermediation services. She continued to love to travel and at this stage of her life she traveled extensively to the developing world. She found riding again in the form of dressage at the Fellowship Farm, where she made lasting friends. She was a devoted grandmother to her four grandchildren (Katharine, Meredith, Matt, and Vi) and enjoyed the annual family vacation at Dude Ranch. She met and loved Becky and Sarah Livingston as her own on one of her first annual trips, and they joined the family for every ranch vacation thereafter.
Kit leaves behind her daughter Lynn Stuart (Dixon) and daughter Ann Ogburn (Adam); Grandsons Katharine and Meredith Ogburn, Matthew and Virginia Stuart; Sister Ann Saslow (Everett, Dec); Brother DuBose Ravenel (Susan); Nieces and nephews: Rett Saslow (Kathryn Lochra) and her sons Loch and Theo; Beth Saslow (Charlie Howland) and their children Carolina and Baird; John Saslow, Virginia and their sons Baker and Everett; Jennifer Lewis (Ben) and her daughters Carter and Renee; and Sam Ravenel (Linda) and their son Pence. Daughter of honor Becky Livingston and her daughter Sarah.
A memorial service of her life will be held on Saturday, May 8th at 11:00 am at Holy Trinity Church in Greensboro, NC.
