Robert Kolodziey Obituary (1940-2021) – Greensboro, NC

Kolodziey, Robert James

August 13, 1940 – October 31, 2021

Robert James Kolodziey passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on Sunday, October 31, 2021. He was born on August 13, 1940 in Norwich Connecticut, the firstborn child of James Joseph and Pauline Kolodziey.

Bob was a proud graduate of Norwich Free Academy (1958), Northeastern University (1963), where he received his degree in chemical engineering and his MBA from Wake Forest (1987). He enjoyed a successful 36 year career with GE Silicones before retiring in 2000. During his illustrious tenure at GE, Bob combined his background in chemical engineering with a dynamic personality to become an excellent salesperson. Praised for both its substance and its style. He spared no expense in entertaining his customers on fabulous trips, world class golf courses and of course great restaurants.

Bob was many things; beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was revered and will be greatly missed by his children, who affectionately called him “Big R”. He loved dogs, red wine, Italian submarines, travel, great restaurants, Oak Island & Hilton Head, but most of all he spent time with his family. A passionate sports fan, Bob drew for the NY Giants, Boston Celtics, and most importantly, his New York Yankees. To his family’s horror, he somehow became a die-hard UNC Tarheel fan, which was great fun in a household of NCSU and WF alumni. Bob was an avid golfer who enjoyed a lot of great rounds with his GE friends at Myrtle Beach and especially with all of the wonderful friends from the Colonial Country Club. Despite his high handicap, Bob couldn’t resist giving uninvited swing tips, had 3 holes-in-one and won many interclub matches and member guest flights.

Bob’s children and grandchildren leave lasting memories of a man who was always there for them, happiest around them, and who loved everything unconditionally. In his final months, Dad taught us all a great lesson in resilience and grace; he didn’t want to fuss or be a burden to anyone and was just happy to get through every day.

Survived by his 37 year old wife Suzanne, children Sondra & John Johnstone, Jill & Dane Johnston, James and Robin Kolodziey, Erin & Shawn McNally and Jennifer Brown, grandchildren Lindsey Rupe, Brianna Provenzano, Sean Eaker, James Eaker, Jake Eaker , Elizabeth Kolodziey, Hadley Kolodziey, Samuel Johnstone and Levi Griffin. In addition, Bob leaves behind his sister Barbara Burke and Tommy Kolodziey; They were a close-knit group who looked up to their older brother and loved him very much.

Dad’s last wish was not to have a funeral, but instead to be cremated and dumped his ashes on Oak Island and the grounds around the old Yankee Stadium. Instead of flowers, please donate to the Piedmont Hospice in his name. Special thanks from our family to all of the wonderful doctors, nurses, and health care workers who helped him through his time of need.
