Samuel Augustine Schug died on December 8, 2021 at the age of 33 after a valiant battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family and received tremendous support from his multitude of friends, family members, potters, and countless admirers. Sam had a dynamic and magnetic personality. With his unforgettable smile and his kind, gentle manner, he made friends wherever he went. Sam exuded a genuineness and authenticity that felt like a breath of fresh air.

He was loved very much and is missed by so many. Sam was a skilled potter fascinated by glass chemistry, a teacher, avid cyclist and bicycle mechanic, philosopher, comedian, and provider of facts and strong opinions. Sam enjoyed thinking deeply and critically, with a brilliant mind and an exceptional memory for facts, statistics, and movie quotes. He found joy in spending time outdoors, connecting with animals, as well as through play and creativity.

Sam believed in enjoying life to the full; he was never a victim of his cancer and his illness never defined him. Just a few weeks before his death, he was creating new clay works, teaching pottery and traveling with his family. Sam loved Formula 1 racing and motorcycles. His humor, his passion for knowledge and his love for his family and friends were fully visible right up to the end.

Sam was born in Ohio and spent his formative years in New York State. He leaves behind his father Malcolm Schug, stepmother Gwen Robbins Schug, mother Sarah Cripps, grandmothers Tanya Schug and Marianne Matthews, sisters Madeline Schug and Amelia Cripps, stepbrothers Felix and Isaac Kotler, brother-in-law Ryan Wirbelauer, nephew Silas Gray Wirbelauer, aunts, uncles and cousins And his beloved dog Tuna.

By sharing his intimate experience as a person living with and dying from cancer, Sam made a life-changing impact on those around him. He believed in the importance of creating time, space, and priority in life for family and friends so that time doesn’t pass you by. Wise beyond his 33 years of wisdom, Sam taught loved ones the invaluable lesson: “If nothing happens, everything happens.”

Sam’s family is inviting everyone who loves him to a life ministry celebration at Bur-Mil Park in Greensboro, NC, Shelter # 1 on Saturday, December 18, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Sat.
