GREENSBORO, NC – Tiny Houses Greensboro is working to create a shared apartment and make it available to people in need. Although the rooms are small, the group hopes to have a big impact.

Scott Jones is the chairman of the organization. He hopes a tiny house will make a huge difference in someone’s life.

“Owning a home is something that many people who have never experienced homelessness take advantage of,” said Jones.

Tiny Houses Greensboro is working to create a community of around seven to eight individual houses. The tiny houses will be 12 by 24 feet with a kitchen, bathroom, and sleeping area.

The Greensboro Housing Coalition works with tiny houses. Once finished, they will help bring those in need to the homes.

“There is a tremendous need for affordable housing in Greensboro, especially a small one-bedroom space,” said Brett Byerly, executive director of the Greensboro Housing Coalition. “There are a lot of people who just can’t afford a one-bedroom unit.”

More than 700 people are homeless in Guilford County, according to a count by Partners Ending Homelessness. The American Community Survey also found that there are more than 25,000 renters in Greensboro who are polluted.

The houses cost around $ 15,000 to build and the rent is based on what people can afford. The organization hopes that the people living there will one day pay for it.

“Our hope is that once people live in a home, their true identities, skills and things to give back to Greensboro will quickly surface,” said Teri Hammer, vice chairwoman of Tiny Houses Greensboro.

Tiny Houses Greensboro has already purchased a lot for the houses on the west side of Merritt Drive. They’re launching a fundraiser Friday night with their board members taking turns sleeping in a tiny house until they raise $ 50,000. The money received will be used to build the infrastructure on this property.

Information on donating to the group can be found on their website.
