UnitedHealthcare is popping cafeteria right into a meal prep base for needy Greensboro residents
GREENSBORO, NC – (BUSINESS WIRE) – Many Greensboro families will have access to free, healthy meals as UnitedHealthcare of North Carolina reallocates its campus cafeteria staff to provide 6,000 meals each week for at least the next seven weeks. The effort comes as nonprofits report a massive increase in the number of families in need of help with access to food.
Executives at UnitedHealth Group, the parent company of UnitedHealthcare, have devised the plan to help Compass Group’s hospitality workers get back to work in recently closed office canteens in several US cities, including Minneapolis and Las Vegas. UnitedHealthcare Greensboro’s campus cafeteria will be among those preparing hot and cold meals to be distributed across Guilford County, which was one of the highest food insecurities in the country prior to the coronavirus crisis.
“During this unprecedented public health emergency, access to healthy meals is becoming increasingly challenging for many North Carolinians,” said Anita Bachmann, CEO, UnitedHealthcare Community Health Plan of North Carolina. “We are honored to be able to reallocate space and resources to help serve the needs of the North Carolinians and ensure that individuals can stay busy during this difficult time.”
UnitedHealthcare works with eight community partners to distribute meals and ensure Guilford County’s residents are fed. These organizations include Greensboro Urban Ministry, One Step Further, Christ United Methodist Church, and Family Service of the Piedmont; as well as Senior Resources of Guilford, YWCA Family Shelter, Greensboro Housing Authority, and Hope Academy.
“UnitedHealthcare is the first to come forward and offer enough meals to cater to Potter’s House communal kitchen guests in that capacity,” said Chris Ringuette of Greensboro Urban Ministry, who runs the communal kitchen. “This donation will help alleviate the burden on Greensboro City Department from the increased needs of the community due to the pandemic.”
Meals are prepared by 10 Compass Group employees who normally cook for and serve UnitedHealth Group employees, most of whom now work from home.
The healthy menu options change daily as directed by Compass Group’s Chef Amanda Boan, and include dishes such as chicken parmesan cheese, spiced rice and steamed carrots, and packed lunches with a selection of sandwiches, fresh fruit, chips and water.
UnitedHealth Group pays nearly $ 250,000 in grocery bills and wages for Compass Group employees in Greensboro. This deployment builds on the UnitedHealth Group’s recently announced $ 50 million initial commitment to serve communities affected by COVID-19.
