William Ward Obituary (1933-2021) – Greensboro, NC

Ward, Sr., William “Bill”

June 4, 1933 – October 15, 2021

William “Bill” Ward Sr. went home to be with the Lord on Friday, October 15, 2021 after a brief illness. He was 88 years old.

Bill was born in Liberty, North Carolina to the late Wesley and Beulah Ward. He graduated from Liberty High School and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He joined the US Marine Corps in 1952 after working for AT&T in Greensboro. During his time with the Marines, he was stationed in Korea. After his honorable discharge in 1956, he returned to North Carolina and returned to AT&T until he retired in 1998.

In 1957, Bill married the love of his life, Margie Herndon. The couple settled in Greensboro, where they raised their children, Billy and Mandy.

Friends say Bill was an original. He had a strong work ethic that forced him to stay employed after retirement; Woodworking and gardening were just a few of his activities. He believed that helping people was very important and he did everything he could to help others.

Bill was never put off by obstacles; he has always penetrated her. He once coached a team of soccer players who had been cut off by a better team. Bill motivated the guys to beat the team they thought wasn’t good enough.

Bill served in Florida Street Baptist Church, serving as Junior Boys Sunday School Teacher, and later as a deacon.

With his unique wit and intelligence, Bill loved having engaging conversations with family and friends. He especially recommended the weekly breakfast with his “Liars Club” friends. Together with Margie he devoted himself to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Bill leaves behind his 64-year-old wife, Margie Ward; Children: William Ward Jr. (Billy) (Brenda); Amanda Chambers (Mandy) (Jeff); Grandchildren: Trent Womble (Jackie); Taylor Womble (Ashlyn); Great-grandchildren: Grayson, Caden, Regan, Palmer, and Oakley; and Sister Margaret Hemphill.

In death he is preceded by his sisters Ann Ward and Jane Fisher; and brothers Leon T. Ward and Cliff Ward.

The family welcomes friends on Monday, October 18, 2021, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Loflin Funeral Home in Liberty.
