Wilmer Gene Tanner, 81, of Greensboro, died on Thursday, October 21, 2021 at Moses Cone Hospital. He was the loving husband of Ann Johnson Tanner for 40 years.

Gene was born on December 6, 1939 in Sandersville, GA to the late Grady and Hester Tanner. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1961 and was a lifelong Bulldog fanatic. Gene’s career has included serving as a high school teacher, Burlington Industries Textiles in management, and the Rockingham County Health Department as a public health inspector. He and his wife Ann loved traveling the world together. Gene was a member of Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church for 40 years, serving as a Sunday School teacher, working with the children during Summer Bible School, and helping with Bible studies.

In addition to his parents, Gene is preceded by his brother Ben Tanner, who died in May 2019.

He is survived by his wife Ann Johnson Tanner; Sons, Brian Christopher Tanner and wife Rebecca from Hickory, NC and Jeffrey Miles Tanner and wife Amy from Wilmington, NC; five grandchildren, William Tanner, Virginia Tanner, Parker Tanner, Sam Tanner, and Mattie Tanner; two nephews, Mike Tanner and Pat Tanner; Niece, Alisa Tanner Smith; Cousin Cora Fay Humphrey; and numerous friends.

On Monday, October 25, 2021, at 2:00 p.m., there will be a funeral service in the Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church under Rev. Dr. Jeff Johnsen instead. The burial takes place in the church cemetery. The family receives friends one hour before the service from 1 p.m.

All memorials can be exhibited at the Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church of Children’s Service.
