Winston-Salem safety guard fatally shot in Greensboro Meals Lion | Crime information

GREENSBORO – A Food Lion security officer who was shot and killed Saturday night has died.

According to a police press release, Anthony Charles Smith, 51, of Winston-Salem, was shot and killed around 7:15 p.m. by a black man who was described as fair-skinned, stocky, early 30s, 1.70 to 6 cm, feet tall, last seen in a black hooded sweatshirt, black pants, black hat and Nike sneakers. He was last seen escaping the crime scene on foot south on South English Street.

Smith was employed by the security firm Guard One and was working as a security guard at the Food Lion grocery store at the time of the shooting. He was in the store when he was confronted by the shooter and, according to the report, suffered the gunshot wound.

At the time of the shooting, numerous frightened shop customers fled the police’s arrival. Investigators asked anyone who was in the store between 7:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. to call either Crimestoppers (336) 373-1000 or Detective AR Hinson (336) 574-4004.

Mr. Smith’s autopsy is scheduled for Monday. The investigation continues.
